Tempered glass and standard glass differ in the how they are processed. For the manufacture of any type of glass, sand, soda ash and lime are mixed and melted at very high temperatures. This hot fluid is formed in the glass by the methods of blowing, pressing, or drawing. Once formed glass, it passes through an annealing process, where heat and cool again. This prevents shattering and restores its strength.
The annealing or cooling process is what determines whether it will be tempered glass or standard. Tempered glass is required to cool very rapidly while the normal glass is allowed to cool slowly. Standard glass slow cooling produces different properties to those found in tempered glass cooled quickly. Tempered glass is often called tempered or reinforced glass, which can withstand at least four times the pressure of standard glass.
The most striking feature is like tempered glass breaks or ruptures. Standard glass is broken in general, irregularly shaped fragments sharp. Tempered glass, breaks into small pieces evenly, reflecting a much lower risk of harm to those who come in contact with them.
Temperate glass is more resistant to heat and scratch resistant than untreated glass. Outwardly, tempered glass does not seem different from standard glass. Both glass types are available in different sizes and thicknesses and can be colored or dyed.
Standard glass can be cut to size or compressed into shape after to be processed. If an application requires standard glass edges can be polished or holes in it. Strengthened glass can not be altered after tempering. Attempts to cut or drill into a tempered glass panel that would mean breaking completely.
Because that is stronger and safer fracture pattern than ordinary glass, tempered glass that was once the standard for car windows and glass doors.
